Q: Is it really free to add my book/peom/script etc?
A: Yes. You can submit your material and if accepted it will be posted at no
cost. There is such a thing as "Premium Content" that costs money in exchange
for some special features, but this option is NOT required for a general
listing.
Q: Do I retain some rights to the work that I submit? A: Absolutely. By this we
mean:
1) You are free to remove any work you've submitted from the
listing by logging into your account and doing so at any time.
2) You are free to submit/distribute your work to other places. If
your submission gains the attention of a traditional publisher, by all means
publish it with our blessing!
3) If someone copies your work under a different name, you are free
to flag it and let us know to take it down.
4) Having said the above we reserve the right to distribute any
work submitted to us in other forms. Be it in the form of a compilation DVD,
electronically or by other means, in whole or part. Basically this statement
just says we're covering ourselves if the site changes and we want to distribute
the data we have some other way. We won't intentionally further distribute
submissions that have been taken down (at the time the distribution package was
made).
Q: Why don't you allow fan fiction?
A: We at Nerdtopia enjoy fan fiction as much as the next people. However we
don't enjoy takdown notices from copyright owners or Trademark holders. We
recommend you post this material to one of the many, many, many, many, *deep
breath* many, many, many, many, many other places devoted to the subject.
Q: Do you log IP addresses? If so, what do you use them for?
A: In some cases. But we're not trying to being nefarious. We use them for:
1) Blocking known spammers (ie people submitting unapproved
advertisements and other garbage).
2) Blocking known griefers (ie. people who repeatadly false flag
material as inappropriate or repeatedly submit inappropriate or someone else's
copyrighted material) 3) Legal reasons (ie. We get a court order to identify
someone (by IP) who's breaking a law) In other words, if you're using the site
for it's intended purpose, it's not going to factor into anything.
Q: Can I submit material that I didn't write as long as it's in the public
domain?
A: No. Wait, did you want an explanation? Okay, here's some reasons:
1) The whole point of the site is for you to promote your OWN work.
Not someone who's been dead for 200 years etc.
2) There's plenty of other places to get public domain books. I
suggest you start here (guttenburg)
3) It's too easy for people to confuse "Free E-Book" with "Public
Domain E-Book". Lawyers do know the difference and we'd rather just not go
there.
Q: Can I submit material if I didn't write it? (But this friend of
mine/relative/etc. did)
A: No. The orginal author must submit the material. It's the only way we can be
sure that copyright is valid.
Q: Why does Nerdtopia use moderators?
A: Some reasons that come to mind:
1) Moderators may go over submissions to resolve disputes about
appropriateness or copyright.
2) *we hope* This keeps out the majority of spammers.
3) Moderators enforce quality control. Material may/may not be
modded at the outset. It depends on the balance of what's getting flagged/ man
hours/ etc.
Q: Why was my submission rejected/removed?
A: There's several reasons why this might have happened. Some of it is a
judgement call and others are more concrete:
1) You violated the rules in your submission.
A) Was it SPAM?
B) Did it violate a copyright?
C) Was it Fan Fiction?
D) Are you under 13 years of age?
E) etc.
2) For whatever reason your submission was deemed inappropriate for
posting. What do we mean by this? Basically if it's something we think more
users will hate than like (And flooding us with complaints over), we'll take it
off the site. It's not so much a question of censorship as it is catering to a
mainstream audience. We're trying to provide a service for our users and it's
difficult to do that while getting deluged with angry emails. Having said that
there are clear age groupings and categories and we're pretty forgiving within
that framework. However, we do reserve the right to take down material that's
causing more harm than good.
3) The quality isn't there. Yes we're an amateur site. But that doesn't
mean you can submit 100 documents with one letter of the alphabet each, or the
test answers to Mrs. Finkelstien's Math quiz and expect it to stay posted. This
site is about authors AND readers. If the submission doesn't benefit both we may
choose to take it down.
4) If we just don't want to post it. When you get your own site, you can
do that too.
Q: I added an author profile. Why do I not see it when I search for the name?
A: Authors are not displayed in searches until at least one piece of material is
accepted. You can however, still log in and view/change your profile in the
meantime.
