(Posted for the benefit of our less technically inclined brethern) Bit - One 0 or 1 in a string of data that the computer interprets to execute programs or store information. Black Hat - Someone who uses thier nerd skills for evil. Not to be confused with the bad guys in old westerns (Despite obvious similarities). Byte - Eight bits strung together like this 11001101 or some such. Why 8? Because your computer works in Base 2 (see 0's and 1's) so eight bits organize very neatly into it. Also great for making "byte me" T-Shirts. What's that you say? It's a lame joke? Hey, you're the one visiting a site called NerdTopia. Think about it... Cracker - A hacker that uses their skills to gain illegal entry into someone elses system. Bad nerd! Bad! Bad! Bad! Fanboy - Someone obsessed with "Game system x is better than Multibox y!" , "My operating system is better than yours", "Only stupid people wear shoes when they can have sandles!" Endless discussions about electronics (usually games or operating systems) that amount to brand loyalty by people who support one product over another has resulted in more than one lost friendship, night spent doing something more productive, or precious video game playing time. Hacker - Unlike how the press defines the term, nerds define a "Hacker" as someone who fiddles with technology with the aim of learning it inside and out, often making it do things it was not originally designed for. Key Logger - Aka. "Logger". Program that keeps track of keystrokes made by a user. Usually looks for things like credit card numbers, passwords, or other sensitive information which is then transmitted back to a black hat programmer. 1337 - "Leet" or "Elite"- Term to describe someone who's good at hacking. Usually used in self reference by people who are not good at hacking. (Or an insult throw at others as in "OMG u are so 1337". Malware - Software created for malicious intent. Usually associated with spyware. Nerd - Socially dysfunctional person who spends excessive time on <list obsession here>. Nerd Groupie - Significant other of the nerd. Occasionally nerds get married and multiply. Sometimes, just sometimes the SO is a non-nerd. Someday this will be classified as a mental disorder. n00b - Also known as a Newbie, Nube, or Newb. Technically disinclined users. (If you're reading this section, this means you!) P2P - Peer-to-peer. A specialized piece of software that allows users to trade files across the internet. Can be used for good, but generally used to violate copy laws. (See also Pr0n). Pr0n - Web sites or materials that... uhm... well, let's just say that you wouldn't want to have your mother walk into the room while viewing. *I'll tell you when you're older* Script Kiddie - Someone not smart enough to make their own Viruses/Trojans/Worms so they use a program made by someone else to do it for them. Spyware - Software installed by companies with other programs or secretly when you visit a website, that spies on your web surfing activites, pops up ads, or both. Trojan - A program that pretends it's something else. (For example, you might think you're downloading a screensaver when there is actually a Virus/Worm/Key logger also being installed) Evil ain't it? User - Person who actually uses the software. Anyone can be a user, but nerds usually refer to the term to equate to Noob. Virus - A program that self replicates and does damage to the machine it infects. (Hard drive deletion, etc.) Try not to get one of these. Warez - An illegal site that distribues software without the proper permission of the copyrite holder. Also often a spreader of trojans. If you see a site advertising as "Warez" run away. White Hat - A hacker that uses his/her skills for good rather than evil. ie. Fixing security issues etc. Worm - A program that self replicates itself, but does no permanent damage to the machine it infects. Much more to come... no Really.... |
